Obituary

Marjorie Fink Katz, longtime resident of Poughkeepsie and retired member of the Vassar College Faculty, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, May 13th at Chandler Regional Hospital in Chandler, Arizona. She was 79 years old. Mrs. Katz, daughter of Hyman and Gertrude Fink, was born October 30th 1928. She was raised in Cedarhurst, N.Y., and graduated from Lawrence High School, in 1946. She received her BA degree from Vassar College in 1950, and her Masters degree in Education from SUNY New Paltz in 1973. In 1949 while she was still a student at Vassar, she married the love of her life, Dr. Burton Katz, dentist. The couple had three daughters, Susan, Debra, and Sara. Mrs. Katz was a resident and active community member of Poughkeepsie for more than fifty years. She remained in Poughkeepsie after her husbands death in 1993, finally moving to AZ in 2000. Her career in education began in the early sixties at the Poughkeepsie Day School. After serving for a number of years on the Board of Trustees, Mrs. Katzs first teaching experience was at the Day School as a math specialist, organizing and designing hands on materials for the elementary grades. In 1973 Mrs. Katz was appointed to the Vassar College Faculty in the Department of Education. Her teaching responsibilities included both math instruction and supervision of Vassar student teachers in the local schools. She retired in 1990. Mrs. Katz was a long time member of Vassar Temple, and an active member of the Vassar Temple Sisterhood. Following her appointment as Temple Historian in 1990, she undertook the very ambitious responsibility of organizing the Temple archives. This required much research, collection of memorabilia, and the recording and transcription of many oral histories. She gathered all of these records in a bound volume which will now be a permanent and invaluable archive. Mrs. Katz is survived by daughters, Susan (Richard) Lomaz of Pepper Pike, OH, Debra Katz (Orrantia) of Tempe, AZ, and Sara (Hocine) Katz-Imadali of Chandler, AZ; a brother, Julian Fink, of Boynton Beach, FL; six grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am on Sunday, May 25th , at Vassar Temple, 140 Hooker Ave., Poughkeepsie, New York; Rabbi Paul Golomb officiating. Burial will be in the family plot at Vassar Temple Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Schoonmaker Funeral Home, 110 Fulton Ave., Poughkeepsie, New York 12603.
