Sarah Shirrell
Carlin
May 20, 1966 — Aug 5, 2024
Millbrook
Sarah Shirrell Carlin, 58, of 63 West Farm Drive in Millbrook, NY died peacefully at home surrounded by family on Monday, August 5th. She is survived by her husband, Earl Carlin; her children Robert "Rip" (married to Katherine) and Hanna; grandchildren Scott, Ellie and Nora; and sister Ann Rand (married to Mac). Sarah was predeceased by her son, Earl Scott Carlin.
Sarah was born on May 20, 1966. She grew up in Scarsdale NY, and graduated from Fox Lane High School in Bedford NY in 1984. Equestrian sports were a keen interest from a young age and the family eventually had several horses. Sarah and Earl were married on October 21, 1989. Her love and knowledge of the horse world came in quite handy as Sarah and Earl moved to North Carolina, Oklahoma, and Virginia where Earl managed farming and cattle operations. Sarah and their growing family, plus critters of all shapes and sizes, turned every house into a home as she expanded her network of friends from all walks of life and made lifelong friendships. Their final stop was in Millbrook, NY where they have lived for close to 25 years. Throughout their life together Sarah was a loving and supportive wife.
Armed with an always-ready smile, big laugh and outgoing personality combined with boundless energy, Sarah was the ideal holiday party host (oftentimes with dozens of guests!). Everyone looked forward to her traditions like shaking buttermilk into butter while giving thanks and special recipes like artichoke chicken salad. Extra settings were always ready for additional guests, from distant relatives to school friends of the kids. Evenings often ended with countless rounds of Hearts. Everyone was always welcomed and embraced at Sarah's home.
Everything Sarah did was for her children. She loved to volunteer her time and energy at school events. She raised amazing kids and set them up for great lives. Most importantly she put them on the path to raise even better kids of their own. Losing Scott in 2014 at age 22 was a devestating blow to the family. Her overwhelming strength and perseverance was astonishing. However, her (and Scott's) warm smile, spirit, and love will always live on, not only in her family but in everyone who was fortunate enough to have known her.
The family would like to give a special thank you to Sarah's Hudson Valley Hospice team for their excellent care and gentle kindness:
