Obituary

Samantha Claire Hassett, 35 most recently of Mechanicville New York, passed away peacefully, Tuesday, April 11, 2023 at Saratoga Hospital after a brave and valiant battle with gastric cancer.  She was born in Poughkeepsie on August 21, 1987 to John and Margaret Hassett (nee Carotenuto.

Samantha is a graduate of Spackenkill High School Class of 2005.  While there, Samantha demonstrated both her academic and athletic acumen as a member of the National Honor Society and serving as captain of both the varsity girls' soccer team and the varsity girls' field hockey teams.  While in college Samantha developed a love for the practice of hot yoga and was a lifelong practitioner.  Samantha loved living in New York City and having access to museums and restaurants and world class shopping, Samantha loved fashion. Samantha loved music both classic rock bands such as Fleetwood Mack, the Beatles, the Rascals as well as contemporary artists like Taylor Swift. Samantha loved the beach and family vacations to the Outer Banks, North Carolina and to Ocean City, New Jersey.

Samantha attended Fordham University, graduating Magna Cum Laude in 2009 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in both Philosophy an English.  Upon graduation Samantha worked at the Eugene Lock Law Firm in New York City, a personal injury law firm.  While there, Samantha worked on medical malpractice cases and she developed an interest in neuroscience and decided to pursue medical school instead of law. She attended and graduated with honors from the Post Baccalaureate Pre-Med Program at Columbia University and was preparing to enter medical school.

Most recently, Samantha lived and worked in New York City.  She was a research assistant at the New York State Psychiatric Institute at Columbia University Medical Center where she supported the research team working on learning the cognitive effects of ECT therapy on patients suffering from anxiety and depression, with a goal of extending the research to those individuals with Alzheimers and dementia.

Samantha is survived by her parents, John and Margaret Hassett, her brothers Michael Hassett (Katheryne), her niece, Autumn, and nephews Logan and Michael of Sweet Valley Pennsylvania, and Sean Hassett (Maribel), and her nephew Liam of Wappingers Falls, New York.

She is survived by her aunts and uncles, Laura and Stephen Crisafulli of Poughkeepsie, Frank and Sheila Carotenuto of Falmouth, Massachusetts, John and Irene Linner of Lancaster, South Carolina, Peter and Anne Duggan of West Bloomfield, Michigan, John and Pat Crutchfield of Marlborough, Massachusetts and her many loving cousins.

Samantha's parents wish to thank her oncologist, Dr. Stephen Gruenstein and his entire team at New York Blood and Cancer, Dr. Anthony Vine and his entire surgical team at Mr. Sinai Hospital, and Dr. Phillip Rabito, Dr, Christian Zunartu for their loving and compassionate care. They wish to thank her primary care nurse, Sam and his team from Optum as well as the team at Interventional Radiology at Saratoga Hospital, and the doctors and nurses of the Emergency Department and the ICU at Saratoga Hospital.

Visitation will be held on Friday, April 14, 2023 from 4-7 p.m. at Parmele, Auchmoody, & Schoonmaker Funeral Home, 110 Fulton Avenue, Poughkeepsie, NY 12603.  A Mass of Christian Rite will be held on Saturday, April 15, 2023 at St. Martin De Porres Church, 118 Cedar Valley Road, Poughkeepsie, NY 12603
