Sal Farinato was born on November 21, 1921 in Bronx, New York (740 South Oak Drive) to Alfredo and Christine (nee Terrizzi) Farinato. During his childhood he, his sister Justine and his parents lived in several places throughout the Bronx (3755 Barnes Ave.; 1180 East 221st St.; 770 E. 221st St.). He graduated from Evander Childs High School in the Bronx in 1940. While in high school he worked at the 1939 World's Fair in Flushing Meadows, NY. After high school he was employed as an engine lathe operator for Sperry Gyroscope Company from 1941-1943. As a result of World War II he entered active military service in the U.S. Army on June 30, 1943 where he served as a utility repairman in the European Theater with the 763rd Railway Shop Battalion (Company A). He received training as a utility repairman, railway car mechanic and military policeman. He was honorably discharged on April 14, 1946 at Fort Dix, New Jersey.  During his technical training at Camp Millard in Bucyrus, Ohio he met Cecilia Rachel from Mansfield, Ohio. After the war, they were married on November 23, 1946 at Saint Peter's Church in Mansfield. They moved back to the Bronx shortly thereafter and started a family, having three sons (Raymond, Paul and Alfred).

In the early 1950's Sal and Cecilia moved their family to Thornwood, NY in Westchester County. Sal's employment as a machinist for various companies allowed his family to prosper and enjoy the stability of a caring family life.  Possibly unrecognized by them at the time, the boys eventually benefited from Sal's mastery in several areas: an apparently unlimited ability to fix things, a love of the outdoors, a compassionate regard for people, and how to nurture a loving family.

After the three boys were out of the house, Sal and Cecilia moved to Thomaston, Connecticut in the 1970's, where he worked as a master machinist for the Timex Corporation for several years. At the age of 62 he retired and began pursuing a host of other interests, including piloting gliders, riding motorcycles, fishing, and fabricating and flying radio-controlled model airplanes. He also created a basement workshop and took up fine woodworking, from which we all benefitted. In 2011 Sal and Cecilia closed their chapter in Thomaston and moved to Pleasant Valley, NY where they took up residence in an apartment attached to the house of, and built by their son Alfred. At times Sal was surrounded there by four generations of his family, which brought him immeasurable joy, and we believe some peace in his last days. Sal continued living there until his demise of natural causes in the late afternoon of July 3, 2016. He is survived by his wife Cecilia, three sons (Al, Paul and Ray), four grandchildren (Luke, Kate, Samuel and Maxwell), and one great grandchild (Maisie).

Where a person goes after death, we are not certain. What we can say is that some of the love, wisdom and character that they exhibited in their life are kept alive in the people that they influenced. By that measure, Sal Farinato has made this world a much better place.

A Memorial Service will be held on Sunday July 17, 2016  from 1-4pm at Allen Funeral Home, 1605 Main Street, Pleasant Valley, New York with military honors being rendered during the memorial service.
