Obituary

Ruth S. Greenwood, of Salt Point, NY, died December 8, peacefully at home in her sleep.  Born, November 14, 1925, in Elizabeth, NJ, of Charles Sebold and Jeanette Carley Sebold, she graduated Batten High School in Elizabeth, NJ and attended Linden Hall and Drexel institute of Technology as a Home Economics major. Ruth married George Greenwood in June of 1946 at Epworth Methodist Church in Elizabeth and was married 61 years until his death in 2008.  Ruth was always interested in her son's activities at school, church and Boy Scouts and she was active in community affairs.  She was a volunteer at the Pleasant Valley Library since 1982.  Her interests laid in sewing, knitting and other crafts.  She made most of her clothes as well as draperies, slipcovers and over 20 quilts.  You never saw her sitting without her knitting needles and she knitted over 170 sweaters for World Vision "Knit for Kids".  She used to say, "As one person I can't do much to make this a better world, but if I can make one child happy with a new sweater, then I have done something." Two of her greatest delights were gardening and flower arranging.  She was a professional florist, winning many prizes at flower shows and she belonged to garden clubs wherever she lived.  George was a hiker, and twice Ruth hiked up Mt. Washington in N.H. and spent a night in a tent in the Adirondacks when it was zero.  Often she said, "at least I tried".  And try she did to keep everyone around her happy and well fed. Ruth leaves sons Jeffrey and his wife, Zoe, of Morris, CT and Gregory and his wife, Christine Perey, of Montreux, Switzerland; grandchildren Rebecca and her partner Floyd Snyder, of Montana; Jeremy and his wife, Kate of Idaho. Veronique and her husband, Austin Werner of China; Vivianne and her husband, Ian Morrison of Maryland and Brigitte of Zurich, Switzerland plus one great granddaughter, Valerie Morrison.  We will miss her. A celebration of her life will be held at the Westminster Presbyterian Church, Salt Point, NY, on Saturday, January 2, 2016, at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Pleasant Valley Library, P.O. Box 633, Pleasant Valley, NY 12569; Westminster Church, P.O. Box 271, Salt Point, NY 12578 or Dutchess Outreach, 29 N. Hamilton St, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601 Arrangements have been entrusted to Allen Funeral Home, 1605 Main St., Pleasant Valley, NY 12569.
