Roland Easton Butts, of Poughkeepsie, NY, died peacefully in his home on Thursday, April 27, 2017. He was 72 years old. Born on April 22, 1945 in Poughkeepsie , he was the son of the late Franklin A., and Helmy (Easton) Butts. He graduated Poughkeepsie High School in 1963 – where he played on the basketball and football teams; Columbia University in 1967 – where he played football and was a member of Beta Theta Pi; and Albany Law School of Union University in 1973. He was a Vietnam Veteran and served in the US Army from 1967-1970. He married Rosemary P. Morris on July 19, 1969 in East Hartford, CT and together they had three sons. Roland practiced law in Poughkeepsie for 43 years and was a former City of Poughkeepsie Judge. He also was an avid golfer. He was past President and Board member of the Poughkeepsie YMCA; Past President and Board Member, Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery; and a Member of Poughkeepsie Rotary. His commitment to community was far reaching. He served on the Poughkeepsie Planning Board. He was instrumental in saving the Bardavon Theater. A man of faith and service, he was an active member of Tres Dias and worshipped at Freedom Plains United Presbyterian Church. He traveled to the Dominican Republic to do mission work with Bridges to Community. In short, he was a man of principle who lived a principled life. Roland is survived by his wife Rosemary; son Michael R. of Poughkeepsie; son Thomas F. and wife Michelle L. of Glenside, PA; son Jeffrey A. and wife Melissa C. of Poughkeepsie; his grandchildren, Alexis, Jackson and Zachary; his siblings William Butts and wife Marianne of East Pepperell, Massachusetts; Allison Butts and wife Ellen of Chevy Chase, MD; Catherine B Hanley and husband Michael of Milan, NY; and many nieces and nephews. Calling hours are Tuesday May 2, 2:00-4:00pm and 7:00-9:00pm at Parmele, Auchmoody and Schoonmaker Funeral Home, 110 Fulton Ave, Poughkeepsie, NY 12603. A memorial service will take place on Wednesday, May 3, 11:00am at Freedom Plains United Presbyterian Church, 1168 Route 55, LaGrangeville, NY 12540, followed by a reception at the church. Interment will be at 2:00pm at Stanfordville Cemetery, Stanfordville, NY. Memorial donations may be made in Roland's name to Honor Flight Network and Freedom Plains United Presbyterian Church.
