Michael Richard Makar, 86 of Poughkeepsie, passed away on Sunday, August 14, 2022. Born in Yonkers, NY on October 21, 1935, he was the son of Michael and Mary Krupa Makar. He attended PS 25, Longfellow Jr. High and C.E. Gorton HS. Mike earned a Bachelor's Degree from Cornell University and a Master's Degree in Education from SUNY New Paltz.
He was an elementary school teacher at various locations in New York State before teaching in the Millbrook Public Schools for 28 years. He always enjoyed meeting with former students and talking about their progress.
Mike volunteered at Vassar Brothers Hospital, Walkway Over The Hudson and Bingo at Kimisis Greek Orthodox Church. He was also a Cornell Ambassador interviewing applicants applying to Cornell.
He was a past member of the Polish Club, American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association and a parishioner of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church.
Mike is survived by his two sons Michael R. Makar, Jr., and his wife Marianne of Bradenton, FL. and Scott Makar and his wife Nancy Hogshead-Makar of Jacksonville, FL.; his grandchildren, Dosha (Jesse), Aaron, Millicent and Helen Clare, Laura Swift (Adrian), Ryan Norman (Anna) and great grandson Benjamin B. Langworthy; his brother John E. Makar and his wife Lillian; their children, John Jr., (Eileen) and their children Jake and Cory, Stephanie Makar and Jennifer (Robert) Dillon and their children , Robert Jr., Rachel and Ryan; his brother Gregory Makar of Palm Beach, FL.; his niece Stella and Joseph Pagano; several grand-nieces and nephews; dear friends Bonnie Heybruck and Doreen Lyons of Poughkeepsie as well as many friends and former students. He was predeceased by his wife Aliki Papastrat Makar, his sister Irene Lerario and dear friend Harriet Drivas.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Friday, August 19 at 10 am from Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, 1 Mt. Carmel Pl., Poughkeepsie. Interment will follow in Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made in Mike's memory to the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Parmele, Auchmoody & Schoonmaker Funeral Home, 110 Fulton Ave., Poughkeepsie.
