Mary Leitch, 103 years young, of Amenia, NY, passed away peacefully on Christmas Eve 2025. Mary was born on October 8, 1922, in Millerton, NY, to Antonio Mechare and Helena (Haynes) Mechare. She grew up on Winchell Mountain in the hamlet of Irondale, from where she walked to the one-room Irondale Schoolhouse through the third grade. After its closure, she attended the Millerton schools. Over 10 years ago the Irondale Schoolhouse was moved to the village of Millerton as a historic building to visit, located near the rail trail. She was the last person to attend the school and was proud of it. A true country girl, Mary loved the outdoors, animals, and people. She devoted herself to caring for her animals and always had dogs and horses in her life. She was known for her strong work ethic, kind heart, and deep friendships, touching many lives over the years.  Mary enjoyed deer hunting, fishing, and spending time with nature. She was a proud member of the Jack Russell Club of America and the Dutchess County Professional Horseman's Association. She lived by the saying, "If you sit still, you will rust," and remained active throughout her life. In 1958, she married William (Billy) Leitch of Millbrook. Together they shared a love of the sporting life in Dutchess County, particularly through their involvement with the Millbrook Hunt Club, which was an important part of their lives. Billy predeceased her on January 17, 2015. Although Billy and Mary had no children of their own they played a big part in their employers children's upbringing. She also leaves behind many nieces and nephews.  When the COVID-19 pandemic began in 2020, Mary once again found a way to help others. She sewed approximately 600 masks and gave them freely to anyone in need. Mary was truly one of a kind—a legend who will be remembered for her generosity, independence, and love of life. As one would say, "She had a very good run."
Calling hours will be held on Monday, December 29th, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Allen's Funeral Home, 3270 Franklin Avenue, Millbrook, New York. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Tuesday, December 30th, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph's Church in Millbrook, New York. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Joseph's Church or the Dutchess County Professional Horseman's Association.
