Obituary

Martin K. Glass, 75, passed away at home surrounded by his family on January 18, 2016, after an 18 year long battle with cancer. Born in Warnen, Kreis Goldap, East Prussia, on February 4,1940 to Kurt and Lotte Glass.

Martin was captured by the Russians and settled in Dargun, Kreis Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, East Germany. He escaped with his family in 1959 to West Berlin and then resettled in Bielefeld, West Germany. In 1964 Martin and his brother Peter emigrated to the USA. He went to work for J.F. Bahrenburg, Inc. in April 1964 through July 2014. Martin married the love of his life Candace, December 14, 1974 at St. Mary's Church in Poughkeepsie. He was also a proud member o Germania of Poughkeepsie for 52 years.

Martin is survived by his beloved wife Candace Glass and his children Kurt M. Glass, Barbara L. Chase, and Stephen A. Glass (Marilee). He will always be Opa to his adored grandchildren Jakob, Derek, and Andrew.  He is also survived by his brother Peter Glass (Emmy) in Germany.
Martin was adored and admired by all those who knew him.  He was a humble, selfless, hardworking man who could make anyone smile and laugh with his infectious sense of humor which he had right up until he took his last breaths.  His early life, growing up in a war torn country, was filled with great turmoil and heartache which tested his faith for most of his life.  When asked by his loving, prayerful wife in the last days of his life if he knew he was dying, he said, "No, I'm going to see Jesus."
Calling hours for Martin will be held Thursday, January 21, 2016 from 4-7 pm at Allen Funeral Home, 1605 Main St., Pleasant Valley, NY. A mass for the intentions of Martin & his family will be offered at 10 am on Friday, January 22, 2016 at Saint Stanislaus Church in Pleasant Valley. Interment will be private. A gathering will follow at Germania Hall, Old DeGarmo Road, Poughkeepsie.
In lieu of flowers the family has asked that donations in Martin's memory be made to Germania of Poughkeepsie, Inc.-  37 Old DeGarmo Road Poughkeepsie NY 12603 or to Saint Stanislaus Church- 1590 Main St, Pleasant Valley, NY 12569.
