Obituary

Mae Stringer, daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, good friend, avid reader and prolific knitter, passed away on May 30, 2023.  With her were three of her five children.
Mae was born in the Bronx, NY on May 5, 1928 to Lillian and Walter Tierney.  After graduating from Walton High School, she went on to work as a legal secretary. Mae met her husband John Stringer, the love of her life, at a YWCA dance in Manhattan, NY. They married on September 9, 1951 and had five children. She stayed at home to raise their children, returning to work after a few years as a nightshift and weekend cashier at Cornell's Children's Store. Once the kids were all in school and could safely be home alone, Mae went to work full-time as a secretary at Holiday Industries.  John passed away on December 29, 1979.

After Mae retired, she moved to Poughkeepsie with her sister Ethel Tierney.  Mae and Ethel threw themselves into life in Poughkeepsie, joining St Martin de Porres Church, attending water aerobics and senior exercise classes at the JCC and becoming members of the local Red Hat Society. They were known to all as simply "The Sisters". Their real passion was saved for travel. Mae and Ethel traveled all over the world and made friends wherever they went. Ethel passed away in February of 2023. Her family is saddened, but not surprised that Mae passed so soon after Ethel. They were a team who supported each other throughout their lives.

Mae had a good life and left behind a rich legacy.  She is survived by her 5 children and their spouses, 13 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. She will be missed by all.
