Lomay Chang Buck, formerly of 9 Osborne Road, Poughkeepsie NY, died at age 104 on March 3, 2012, at Somers Manor, Somers, NY. She is survived by her daughter, Rosalind, her son, Paul, and two grandchildren, Andrew and Allison. Mrs. Buck was born in China in 1908 and married Dr. John Lossing Buck in China in 1941. She came to the United States with Dr. Buck and their newborn daughter in 1944. Mrs. Buck was the first Chinese to enter the United States after the repeal of the Chinese Exclusion Act. Their son was born in New York City in 1945. The Bucks lived in Washington, DC (1946-1951), then in Rome, Italy, (1951-1954), before settling on the Buck family farm in Freedom Plains-Pleasant Valley, NY in 1954, following Dr. Buck's retirement from the FAO of the UN. They subsequently moved to Poughkeepsie, NY in 1971. Mrs. Buck was a Chinese watercolor artist, painting flowers and birds. She was a member of China Institute in America (NYC) and many local associations including Vassar Brothers Hospital Women's Auxiliary, Day Nursery, Children's Home and Women's City and County Club. After the death of her husband in 1975, Mrs. Buck continued to live in Poughkeepsie for ten years, before moving to The Country House in Yorktown Heights, NY, and finally to Somers Manor. A private burial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church cemetery in Pleasant Valley. Arrangements are under the direction of Allen Funeral Home, Pleasant Valley, NY.
