Lois
Miller
Nov 30, 1948 — Sep 11, 2024
Pleasant Valley
Lois Miller (née Gossweiler), aged 75, passed away after a courageous battle with cancer on September 11, 2024, at the Hospice House in Hyde Park, NY. Lois led a life marked by kindness, compassion, and a delightful sense of humor.
Lois was born on November 30, 1948, to Richard and Rita (Beirne) Gossweiler in East Orange, New Jersey. Lois graduated from Hannover Park High School and continued her education at Berkley Secretarial School, where she graduated with honors. In 1970, she married the love of her life William Miller, and they enjoyed 54 years of marriage. They lived in many places including Plattsburgh, NY and Bradenton, FL before settling in Dutchess County in 1980. Lois dedicated her professional life to helping others as an Outreach Worker in the Special Victims Bureau at the Dutchess County District Attorney's Office, a role that reflected her deep commitment to community service. After retirement she volunteered as an Ambassador for the Walkway Over the Hudson. She also gave her time generously to the Grace Smith House and Freedom Plains United Presbyterian Church.
An active member of the Freedom Plains United Presbyterian Church, Lois' faith was an important aspect of her life. She found joy in the outdoors, cherished family vacations in Wells Beach, Maine, and was an avid reader. Lois's love for walking and engaging with nature was evident to all who knew her. She was a supportive, loving and guiding friend who was always smiling and had something funny to say. She loved Christmas and Halloween, but had a special love for April Fool's day and playing pranks. Her five grandchildren were the joy of her life. She loved spending time with them and would prepare for their visits by filling her cookie jar with fresh baked cookies and making sure her pantry was stocked with their favorite snacks.
Lois is survived by her loving husband William, her daughters Melissa (Joseph Palestro) and Gretchen (Patrick Thomsen), her grandchildren: Megan, Christopher, Jeffrey, Jaiden, and Avery, her sisters Ann Rimbach and Jane Sweeney, many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Rita and Richard Gossweiler, and her brother, Richard Gossweiler.
Visitation will be held at Allen Funeral Home, located at 1605 Main Street, Pleasant Valley, NY, on Saturday, September 21, 2024, from 10 am to 1 pm, with a brief service at 11:30 am. A celebration of her life will be held in the Spring.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice House, Freedom Plains United Presbyterian Church, any charity Lois supported, or a charity of your choice.
