Leonard J. Keller, 97 of Pleasant Valley, passed away on Sunday, February 25, 2018, at Vassar Brothers Medical Center.
He was born in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. on February 13, 1921, to the late Joseph and Anna Neary Keller. A lifelong area resident, Leonard grew up on a small, general farm in Pleasant Valley and graduated from Millbrook High School, where he lettered in soccer. He served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps during WWII and completed a tour in China. Afterward, he lived in Jersey City and took courses at Pratt Institute using the GI bill. Upon his return to Pleasant Valley, he worked for Henry Seigel, building new homes, before starting his own business. He founded Keller Brothers Builders, Inc. with his brother, Don, building custom homes throughout the local area for over 30 years. Leonard had a lifelong love of music and playing the piano, cooking for his family, watching western movies, and rooting for the Mets. He was a strong man with a strong personality and was bowling, playing golf, and keeping us all laughing for his 97 years.
Leonard married his childhood sweetheart and love of his life, Elinor Engel. She was his favorite navigator as they traveled the open road and explored the country on countless road trips. She predeceased him on December 26, 1993. He was very proud of their three daughters and is survived by daughters Veronica Cavalla of Poughkeepsie, Marilyn Riley and her husband, Tom, of Colorado Springs, CO, and Sharon Martin and her husband, George, of Poughkeepsie; six grandchildren, Dan Riley, Irene Clarke, Cheryl Riley, Pattie Kelly, David Riley, and Vanessa Candelora; eight great-grandchildren, Zach Riley, DJ Clarke, Connor Kelly, Evan Clarke, Atticus Riley, Gage Riley, Jeremy Riley, and Benjamin Candelora; neice Arden Commander; and nephews Scott Keller, Marc Keller, David Keller, and Steven Keller. He was predeceased by brother Donald J. Keller; sister Florence M. Keller; son-in-law Peter Cavalla; and cousins Robert Keller, Virginia Higgins, Alfred Ruehle, Richard Ruehle, Roy Ruehle, Mildred Cox, and Eleanor Shade.
Visiting hours are from 4 to 7 PM on Thursday, March 1, 2018 at Allen Funeral Home: 1605 Main St., Pleasant Valley, NY.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered 11 AM on Friday, March 2, 2018 at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church:1590 Main Street, Pleasant Valley, NY.
In lieu of flowers, Memorial Donations may be made to the American Heart Association in memory of Leonard Keller.
