Joseph Wilhelm Bastian lived his last day as he had lived most of his days, in the warm

embrace of his adoring family. Joe was born in Heidelberg, Germany on January 18, 1934, the son of Lena Brecht and Otto Bastian. He immigrated to the United States at the age of 19, starting a new chapter in his life. He learned English, took dance lessons at Arthur Murray, and earned his GED. Upon becoming a US citizen, he proudly served his new country in the US Army and National Guard, attaining the rank of Sergeant.

He married Jean Black on October 3, 1964, the first day of a marriage that would extend into its' 54th year. Along with his devoted wife, he leaves behind four daughters: Gabrielle Bastian and husband William DeSimone, Jean (Bastian) Dreaper and son-in-law Robert Hamilton, Justine Bastian and husband Gordon Raspa, and Kry Bastian and husband Damon Tohtz; three grandchildren: Chelsea Bastian-Hamilton, Kieran Bastian-Hamilton and wife Amanda (Martarano), and Dimitri Tohtz, and two great grandchildren Brooklyn and Trenton Goodson.

A dairy farmer in Wisconsin for thirteen years, Joe attended District One Technical

Institute in Eau Claire, WI and received an Associate's Degree in Agriculture in 1977. The bulk of his working life, over thirty years of service, was spent as an electrician for Metro North Railroad.

Joe was a humble, practical and unassuming man, performing kindnesses for friends,

family and neighbors throughout his life, never seeking recognition or anything in return. He loved to work on home improvement projects, attend his grandchildren's school and sporting events, enjoyed songs and games at family gatherings, and engaged in lively discussions on politics, local and world events, displaying a keen intellect and wit.

After a significant stroke, Joe spent his final years at the Thompson House in Rhinebeck He continued to participate in family outings and events, enjoyed skyping weekly with his grandson, receiving frequent visits from his family and friends, and looked forward to virtually daily visits with his loving wife. The Bastian family will be forever grateful for the high quality of care and devotion to both Joe and Jean demonstrated by the entire Thompson House staff.

Visitation will be held at Allen Funeral Home, 3270 Franklin Ave., Millbrook on Monday, December 3 from 4-7 pm. A memorial service will be held at 11 AM on Tuesday, December 4 from the funeral home. Memorial Contributions may be made to the Activities Department at the Thompson House in Rhinebeck, NY.
