John Brainard Smith passed away on Saturday, November 30, 2024. Born Feb. 24, 1933 in Plano, Illinois to Guy E. and Hazel Brainard Smith. He graduated from Plano High School in 1951, joined the US Air Force in 1953 and served until Dec. 1956.  Jack worked for the New York Telephone Co. in Poughkeepsie, retiring in 1991.  While Jack was in the Air Force stationed in Washington DC, he met his wife Joan on a blind date.  They were married on Nov. 14,1954 and just celebrated their 70th Wedding Anniversary.  They have resided together in Pleasant Valley since 1957. Jack was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Pleasant Valley where he served as Deacon and Trustee several terms over the years.  He was also a member of the Pleasant Valley Grange starting in 1957.  He enjoyed using his handyman skills for the church and to help many friends and relatives.  He grew up near a golf course and became an avid golfer.  He and Joan loved to travel and were in all fifty states and 11 countries. Survivors include his wife, Joan, son Philip and wife Carolyn of Pine Plains, and son Tom and wife Carol of Rhinebeck, daughter Jennifer and husband Tim Wengender of Webster, NY.  Daughter-in-law Barbara Smith Komondorea of Newburgh, NY; nine grandchildren, Michael & Mathew Smith, Krystal Drumm, Amanda Smith, Colleen Chlus, Monica Smith and Andrew, Rachel & Samuel Wengender; an extended family of grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.  Also, brother Edward Smith, brother-in-law Clarence Holdiman and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was pre-deceased by his son Peter Smith, brothers Donald and Larry Smith and sister Sandra Holdiman. Calling hours will be on Friday, December 6 from 4-7 pm at Allen Funeral Home, 1605 Main St., Pleasant Valley. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, December 7 at 10:30 am from First Presbyterian Church, Pleasant Valley. Burial will follow in Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Main St., Pleasant Valley.
