John W. Haslach's Obituary
John W. Haslach, 101, born on December 20,1921, recently living with his family in Pleasant Valley, NY, passed quietly February 15, 2023. John previously lived in Walden NY where he had a farm for over 40 years, and moved to Hughson Commons in Carmel NY for several years. John owned the Esso gas station on 9W in Havestraw before retiring to Walden with his predeceased wife, Evelyn Louise Rabbitt Mellin Haslach.
He served 43 consecutive months enlisting on February 2, 1942, and honorably discharged on September 8, 1945. Served in the Army Air Force as an airplane and engine mechanic working on the P-40 Warhawk, P-47 Thunderbolt and P-38 Lightning throughout Africa, Italy and China-Burma-India. John was presented the Putnam County Veterans Service Medal in 2019.
When the United States entered World War II, the 58th took an active role in the war effort by participating in several operations during a three year overseas tour. These operations include the invasion of Morocco in November 1942, combat operations in the Mediterranean Theater from November 1942 to February 1944, and operations in the China-Burma-India campaign, April 1944 to August 1945. As a result of its superior performance, the 58th received the Distinguished Unit Citation for combat operations.
John is survived by his sister Wilhelmina F. Haslach of Wurtsboro, NY; his daughter Marion and son in law John DeGroodt of Pleasant Valley NY; his two grandsons and their families, Joseph and Bethany Fuscaldo of Cos Cob CT, Great Granddaughter Tory and Great Grandson Tripp; Pasquale and Kelly Fuscaldo of Riverside CT and Great Grandson Milo Francis; his step son, Michael Mellin of Maine, along with his Grandson Michael of Florida and his wife Sylvia, Shawn Mellin of Maine and his wife Caitlin and their children, and Granddaughter Becca. John is also survived by a lifetime of family and friends along his life's journey. Services are not planned at this time. The family requests in lieu of flowers please donate to the Pleasant Valley Ecumenical Food Pantry.
The family would like to extend their appreciation to the Hudson Valley VA Castle Point Home Services and Dutchess County Hospice.
