John J. Farmer, Jr., 87 of Verbank, NY passed away on Wednesday, March 17, 2021 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center. Born in Poughkeepsie, NY on March 22, 1933, he was the son of the late John J. Farmer Sr. and Agnes Gallagher Farmer. Jack was a graduate of Arlington High School, Class of 1950 and Delhi Community College, Class of 1952 with an Associates Degree in Animal Husbandry.
On April 23, 1960 at St. Denis Church in Beekman, Jack married Margaret DeForest. Mrs. Farmer survives at home.
He started his career at the Dutchess County Jail in 1962 as a 'guard' with a small 'g' as Jack would say and then promoted over the next few decades to 'Corrections Administrator' when he retired in October 1993 after 31 years of service.
With his knowledge of Fire Apparatus he became a 'Bird Dog' under Bill Marks, salesman with Sutphen Corporation and sold his first fire engine to the City of Poughkeepsie Fire Department.
He became a member of Union Vale Fire Company in 1953 to the present becoming a Life Member, Past Chief and Past Fire Commissioner.
Jack was instrumental in the building of the 9/11 Firemen's Park in Verbank. He was a member of the Century Village Museum and Past President of the Perry Village Homeowners Association in Boynton Beach, Florida. He was also a member of the Poughkeepsie Elks Club. He played softball in the area until he was 62. Jack was an avid woodworker and enjoyed making countless toys and detailed fire trucks.
In addition to his wife Margaret, he is survived by his sons, John and Terri Farmer of Poughkeepsie and Michael Farmer of Verbank; and his two grandchildren, Kaelin and Andrew. He was predeceased by his son William "Billy" on December 9, 1986 and his daughter Theresa on May 9, 1987.
Visitation will be held on Monday, March 22 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm at Allen Funeral Home, 3270 Franklin Ave., Millbrook. There will be a firemen's service at 8 pm during the visitation. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Tuesday, March 23 at 10 am from St. Joseph's Church, North Ave., Millbrook. Interment will follow in Verbank Cemetery, Verbank.
Memorial donations in Jack's memory may be made to Union Vale Fire Department.
