Obituary

John Andrew Evangelista, 84 of Millbrook NY passed away surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, December 11, 2022, in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. He was born on July 29, 1938, in Poughkeepsie, NY to Raymond and Katherine (Sturiale) Evangelista.  John resided in Millbrook, NY until 2013, where afterwards he would split the seasons between Copake Lake, NY and Jupiter, FL.

He is survived by his wife Dorothy (Vrooman), daughters Deanne Evangelista of Jupiter, FL and Jennifer Oliveira of Northborough MA, son-in-law William Oliveira, grandchildren Angelina and John, two sisters, Evelyn Kocut of Palm Beach Gardens, FL and Joanne Gunther of Nyack, NY.  John was predeceased by his son Gregory John Evangelista, as well as his brother Raymond, two sisters, Mary Doyle and Lena Kristensen and niece Dawn Kocut.  Equally beloved and left to mourn him are numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, neighbors, and friends.

John attended Millbrook schools and enlisted in the Marines in 1956.  After serving his country and receiving an honorable discharge, he was employed by Millbrook Plumbing and Heating (originally his father's business).  In 1969, he joined the Local 201 Plumber's Union and supervised large commercial jobs for Mechanical Construction Company, primarily at IBM's facilities in Poughkeepsie NY.  John also served for over 25 years as the Town of Washington Building Inspector. In 1991, he started the Millbrook Fuel Oil Company and ran it for several years, growing it into a successful business.  He later sold the business to Petro Company and retired a second time.  In Jupiter FL, John became active in his Ocean Parks condo community, helping with many projects and was elected to the Board of Directors where he served for over ten years.

In his youth, John was active in team sports playing baseball, basketball and football and later fast pitch and slow pitch ball for Millbrook.  He was on the Recreation Board at its inception, working on all activities, especially the 4th of July celebrations. He was a Lifetime Member of the Millbrook Fire Department, and a member of the Italian Center.  After retirements, John enjoyed traveling with his wife and friends, notably to Fondi, Italy, where his father emigrated from.  He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, who he loved dearly and of course, his grand dogs.  John loved having breakfast, laughs and salty banter with his "goomba" friends, who for years would gather daily at the Millbrook deli.  He enjoyed many years at Copake Lake, dropping in unannounced to visit friends, riding on his pontoon boat and sitting on his porch swing.  John had a great sense of humor and made friends wherever he went.  People always enjoyed a conversation and a good laugh with him. John touched many lives and was loved by many different people.
