Obituary

Joan Sherow Smith of Pleasant Valley, NY passed away peacefully at home on July 5, 2025. She was born May 24, 1935 to Cecil D. and Olive Briggs Sherow in Pleasant Valley, NY.  Joan graduated from Arlington High School in 1953 and then went to work for the U.S. Government in Washington DC where she met her future husband, John B. Smith (Jack).  They were married November 14, 1954 at the Pleasant Valley First Presbyterian Church and were blessed to celebrate their 70th Wedding Anniversary.

Joan worked for 25 years as a bookkeeper for Freisitzer Electric.  She was an active lifelong member of the Pleasant Valley First Presbyterian Church where she served as an Elder, sang in the choir and taught Sunday school for many years.  She was a member of the Pleasant Valley Grange since 1949 and was Treasurer for the Pleasant Valley Cemetery Assoc. for many years. Joan belonged to the Pleasant Valley Health Committee and ran the hospital equipment loan closet, along with Jack, from their home for over 40 years.  Joan and Jack traveled to all 50 states and several countries; and enjoyed spending time with their large extended family and dear friends.

Joan is survived by her son, Philip and wife Carolyn of Pine Plains NY; son Tom and wife Carol of Rhinebeck NY; daughter Jennifer and husband Tim Wengender of Webster NY; daughter-in-law Barbara Smith Komondorea of Newburgh NY; nine grandchildren, Michael and Matthew Smith, Krystal Drumm, Amanda Smith, Colleen Chlus, Monica Smith, Andrew, Rachel and Samuel Wengender; and extended family of grandchildren and great grandchildren.  Also a sister, Carol Hawley and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and her husband Jack, Joan was predeceased by her son, Peter Smith, brother C. Douglas Sherow, and sisters Eleanor Pink, Dorothy Traver, Jean Gerhards and Gertrude Hewlett.

Visitation will be held on Friday, July 11 from 4-7 pm at Allen Funeral Home, 1605 Main St., Pleasant Valley. A funeral service will be from the First Presbyterian Church, 1576 Main St., Pleasant Valley on Saturday, July 12 at 12 noon. Interment will follow in Pleasant Valley Cemetery.
