Joan Marie Sherow of Poughkeepsie, NY passed away peacefully, surrounded by her sisters and her Lutheran Care One South family, on February 12, 2026 at the age of 94. Joan was born on September 7, 1931 in Poughkeepsie, NY to Herbert S. and Anna C. Sherow, the second of five daughters.

Growing-up Joan worked on the family farm. Joan graduated from Millbrook High School, Millbrook, NY and in high school, her passion was competitive sports including basketball.  She earned a Bachelor's Degree in Physical Education from Cortland State Teachers College, Cortland, NY then taught physical education and coached girls' sports, including a field hockey championship team, for 32 years as a Valley Stream School District faculty member. Joan was dedicated to her students who she affectionally called "her kids" and was a role model and a mentor to many girls.  She leaves behind adoring students who kept in contact with her long after their graduation.

Joan was an athlete and avid golfer during her lifetime. She enjoyed traveling with friends and family. She was a successful real estate investor and spent her summer months on her properties in East Hampton, NY. She lived in Poughkeepsie and East Hampton, NY and Naples, FL once retired.

Joan was proud of her heritage. Her father's family were Scottish and French Huguenot Dutchess County colonists and her mother's family immigrated from Sweden. She was devoted to her family and especially her widowed mother with whom she spent much of her time with later in life. Joan never married but leaves behind close friends of many years and family who miss her dearly. Joan is survived by her sisters Carol DiBenedetto, Susan Puccillo and her brother-in-law Bob Puccillo and her nieces and nephews Ann Dickson and Frank, Lisa Wysocki and Paul, Paul DiBenedetto and Andrea, Joe DiBenedetto, Jim DiBenedetto, Keiko DiBenedetto, Jane Armstrong and Paul Roberts, Andrea "Andi" Bertsche and George, Karen Gale and Greg, Cheryl Quinby and Chris. In addition, her grand-nieces and nephews Mary Dickson, Peter Dickson, Danny Dickson, Matthew Wysocki, Paul DiBenedetto Jr, Anna Roberts, Eric Roberts, Connor and Bre Gale, Kendall and Dustin Wheeler, Katherine Gale, Lauren Gilderdale, Elizabeth Quinby, Cole Quinby  and great grand-nieces and nephews . She is predeceased by her parents Herbert and Anna, sisters Virginia Armstrong and Linda Bugosh, brothers-in-law Gordon Armstrong  and Anthony DiBenedetto and nephew John DiBenedetto.

There will be no calling hours. The family will hold a graveside service at the Nine Partners Cemetery, Millbrook, NY at a future date.

The family thanks the staff of Lutheran Care One South and the Hospice team for the love and outstanding care Joan received. In lieu of flowers donations can be made in Joan's name to the Lutheran Care Recreation Fund or Lutheran Care nursing staff of One South at Lutheran Care Center, 965 Dutchess Turnpike, Poughkeepsie, NY 12603. Additionally, donations can be made to Hudson Valley Hospice, 374 Violet Avenue Poughkeepsie, NY 12601.
