Obituary

Jean C. Barker, 88, of Poughkeepsie, NY, passed away Sunday, April 9, at the Kaplan Family Hospice Residence in Newburgh, NY. Jean was born in Manhattan, NY, on April 5, 1929.  She was the daughter of Michael and Frances Citarella.  Jean married John T. Barker on June 16, 1956 at St. Barnabas Church, Bronx, NY.  Jean is survived by her husband of 60 years, John; her daughter Julie Ford and her husband Wayne; her son John Barker and his wife Karen; her daughter Elizabeth Barker; a granddaughter, Marisa Ford; and her brother Joseph Citarella and his wife Gail.  She was predeceased by a sister, Ann Farda, and a brother Michael Citarella. Before she married, Jean worked in the editorial department of the McGraw Hill publishing company, a job she enjoyed greatly.  After her marriage, Jean dedicated herself to raising her children before returning to work in the Poughkeepsie area.  She worked for a number of local organizations and businesses as an administrative assistant. Jean had a lifelong interest in the arts.  She was a talented artist and a former member of the Barrett Art Center in Poughkeepsie.  Jean was accomplished in pastel, watercolor, and oil painting, and received awards for several of her paintings.  Jean was also interested in travelling, having taken memorable cruises in her single years to Cuba and coastal Maine.  When she was in her 70s, she travelled with her husband to Italy, which fulfilled a long-held dream for both of them.  Their memories from that tour were a frequent subject of conversation for years to come. Jean will be remembered for her graciousness and kindness. She was a loyal friend and very devoted to her family.  Jean will be missed by all who were blessed to have known her. Calling hours will be held from 4-7 pm on Thursday, April 13, at the Robert H. Auchmoody Funeral Home, 1028 Main St., Fishkill, NY.  Burial will be on Friday, April 14, at the Fishkill Rural Cemetery, 801 Route 9, Fishkill, NY following a prayer service at 10 am from the DuBois Chapel on the cemetery grounds.  Donations in Jean's memory may be made to the Food Bank of the Hudson Valley, 195 Hudson Street, Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY 12520 ( www.foodbankofhudsonvalley.org )
