Obituary

Janet Marie MacMillan, 70, daughter of Helen Zimmer and William Hanig, passed away on Wednesday, March 23, 2016 at the CarePartners Solace Center in Asheville, NC,  after an eleven-year valiant struggle with cancer.  She lived in Asheville, North Carolina with her husband, Robert MacMillan.
Janet was born in Long Branch, New Jersey, March 10, 1946.  She grew up in Queens, New York and is a graduate of Richmond Hill High School and St. Johns University where she received her degree in teaching.  Janet taught grades four and five in Queens, New York for a few years before moving to Mahopac with her former husband, Tony Paterno where they raised three children.   Soon after, she taught at Crompond Elementary School,  where she and her husband, Robert MacMillan created and taught a special innovative program for children before retiring in 2003.
Janet was a lover of music, having played the accordion, piano and guitar.  She was a member of the folk group for many years at St John the Evangelist in Mahopac and wrote her own music, some of which has just recently been published with the invaluable assistance of Jay Brown of Black Mountain, NC
Janet is survived by her husband, Robert MacMillan; son, Paul Paterno; daughters, Jeannine McNulty and Julie Paterno; 2 stepsons Lance MacMillan and Ramsay MacMillan, five grandchildren: Morgan, Isabella, Casey, Tucker and Cameron; one step-Grandchild Carson MacMillan;   sister and brother-in-law, Kathleen and Tom Cronin and nine nieces and nephews.
Friends may call on Monday March 28, 2016 from 4-8pm at Robert H. Auchmoody Funeral Home, 1028 Main Street, Fishkill.  A Graveside Service will be held on Tuesday March 29, 2016 at 11am at Mt. St. Mary's Cemetery, Flushing, NY.  Interment will follow.
