Jane Hutchings was born on February 6, 1923 to George and Kathryn Umhofer in Chicago, Illinois.  She grew up in the Beverly neighborhood of Chicago.  In the early 1940s, she met John A. Hutchings and after World War II they married.  Jane and John raised three children in the Chicago area, residing there until moving to Savannah, Georgia in 1985.  John passed away in 1990 and Jane continued to live in Savannah until 2003, when she moved to Millbrook, New York.  She passed away quietly in Millbrook on February 25, 2022 at the age of 99.Jane's eldest grandchild, John, captured her character and the way in which she lived life, writing to her family:

"Grandma had a humble and dignified respect for herself coupled with exceptional grace in how she interacted with others.  She was open-minded and accepting and, at the same time, expected others to genuinely give the same amount of respect and appreciation to others that she would.  That balance, whether it's her acceptance of my family, her views on politics, New York, a show she was watching, or any other matter, has always been in my mind throughout my life.  How would Grandma think about this?  What would Grandma do?  I know I am so fortunate to have known my Grandma and at least think I have the answers to those questions.  Aspiring to be like her has only made me a better person. Grandma's genius, even though she would probably disagree with calling it genius, is that she was never teaching a lesson—it was who she was.  She was more than a pleasure to be around.  I couldn't help but always be engaged in and enlightened by her pragmatic perspective on whatever the topic was.  Of course the icing is that she was exceptionally kind, caring, and made everyone feel so welcome around her. It goes without saying her passing is a great loss to the Hutchings family and everyone she was close with.  But I find comfort knowing she lives on in all of us.  However cliché that is, I know it is true with Grandma." Jane led a full and active life.  She was an avid golfer and bridge player for much of her life, making many friends over those years.  She had a sharp mind and quick wit, which made her a pleasure to be around and kept you on your toes.  She had a never-ending desire to learn the history of our world (having witnessed firsthand  our recent history from the Great Depression to the present) and learn from that history, while at the same time keeping up with the daily news and changes in the world.  Although our family and those she touched will miss her, we can rejoice in having had such a wonderful woman in our lives for so many years.

Jane is survived by her three children: Jack Hutchings (Margie), Janet Hutchings, and Jeff Hutchings (Dayna); six grandchildren: John Hutchings (Cara), Anna McDonald, Jennifer Vellone (Dominic), Allison Hutchings (Michael Dziuban), Leslie Hutchings (Neil Sobin), and David Hutchings; and nine great grandchildren: Michael Hutchings, Ryan Hutchings, Kaiya Hutchings, Eli Hutchings, Dominic Vellone, Henry Dziuban, Anne Dziuban, Elizabeth Sobin, and Natalie Vellone.
