James Edward Devery, 71 of Mahopac NY passed away Thursday, August 18, 2022. James was born to parents John and Helen on January 22, 1951, in Manhattan NY, and was one of five siblings (Patricia, Helen, John, Tommy). James graduated from Roosevelt High School in the Bronx NY, in 1968. James is survived by his wife of 44 years, Patricia (Gmitter), and by Jeff (son), Mary-beth (daughter in law), June (daughter), Jennifer (daughter), Joseph (son in law), and six grandchildren; Kirsten, Willow, Andrew, Addison, Jones and Ophelia.
James was a proud member of the FDNY for 25 years. He began his career as a fireman at Engine 18 in Greenwich Village, before becoming a Fire Marshal, working all over New York City. He became a Supervising Fire Marshal in Manhattan prior to his retirement in 2003. James received numerous medals for his heroic efforts, including those on September 11th 2001, where he was one of the first responders and rescued a civilian from the 51st floor. James was dedicated to the fire department, he loved his work and was truly a selfless, kind hearted man, putting everyone's needs before his. James enjoyed fishing with his free time and was the best "gampy" to his grandchildren. He was incredibly loved and will be sorely missed. He will forever be our Hero.
Visitation will be held Wednesday August 24th form 2-4 and 7-9 at Allen funeral home, 1605 Main St. in Pleasant Valley NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Thursday August 25th at 10am from St. Stanislaus Kostka Church, 1590 Main St. Pleasant Valley followed by burial in St Peter's Cemetery, Poughkeepsie. Memorial donations may be made to the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation.
