Helen Elizabeth Smith of Fort Myers Florida formerly of LaGrange for 61 years, passed away peacefully on September 4, 2015. She was 83. Born on July 21,1932 in Sharon CT to the late William and Anna Rogers Benson Sr. Helen was a graduate of Poughkeepsie High School and a member of the LaGrange Fire Department # 2 Ladies Auxiliary. On September 1,1950 she married William Smith at Freedom Plains Presbyterian Church. Bill passed away suddenly in the line of duty on February 27, 1988 while serving his community as a fireman with the LaGrange Fire Department #2. Helen is survived by her loving children Karen Smith of Key West FL, Wayne Smith of Newburgh and Jill Cornell and husband Michael of Fort Myers FL. Cherished grandchildren Trevor Wofsey and wife Paige, Bryan Wofsey and wife Lona , Brett Wofsey and wife Amanda all of Key West, Brandon Smith and wife Denise of Wappingers Falls, Brittany and Andrea Cornell of Fort Myers as well as five great grandchildren and one expected. Helen was predeceased by her brother William Benson, Jr. A graveside service will be held on Monday September 14, 2015 at 10am at Freedom Plains Cemetery with Rev.Paul Lent officiating.
