Helen Van Nostrand, 98 of Poughkeepsie, passed away peacefully at her residence on the morning of September 7, 2022. Born in Poughkeepsie on January 17, 1924, she was the daughter of Fritz and Bertha Michaelis Schmitz. She was predeceased by her husband Earl Van Nostrand in the early 1980's and they are at long last reunited. Helen was also predeceased by her niece Judith on January 20, 2020. She is survived by the children and grandchildren of Ed Bliss, her second love, by William F. Schmitz...her nephew, by Bert and Raymond Schmitz….also nephews by her niece Carla Stolzenthaler and by numerous grandnieces and grandnephews. Lastly, she is survived by her dear friend Mary Mackay. An incredibly kind, sweet and gracious woman, she was loved by all who knew her over the course of her long life. Helen had a fondness for travel, much of which she did with Ed. She had a good strong disposition and a matching appetite especially for mashed potatoes but she never overate. She was our Matriarch and will be deeply missed, but it is also with gratitude in our hearts that we understand that she has crossed over and once again taken the helm.
There will be a short funeral service on Monday, September 12 at 10 am from Parmele, Auchmoody & Schoonmaker Funeral Home, 110 Fulton Ave., Poughkeepsie. Interment will follow in Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery.
