Gordon Caine MacKenzie, 96, of Salisbury, CT. passed away on Friday, May 6, 2022. Mac or Gordy as he was often referred to by his friends, was born on February 20, 1926, to Dr. Edwin G. and Alice Caine MacKenzie of Millbrook, NY.
After graduating from Millbrook High School, Gordy joined the Army Air Force from 1943-1947. During that time, Gordy spent most of his time as a B-24 tail gunner as part of the "Malfunction Junction" crew, whose assignments were to patrol the Pacific coast for enemy submarines or incendiary balloon bombs; his final year he was part of a B-32 crew as again a tail gunner. After serving in the armed forces, he attended Keystone College followed by a year at Syracuse University. After Syracuse, Gordy worked for the DuMont Corporation in NYC as an assistant in Studio A; the DeLaval Separator Company in Poughkeepsie, NY as an industrial inspector, and then finally joining IBM in Poughkeepsie as an analyst, working there for the next 27 years until his retirement.

While an avid skier, recreational pilot, hockey player, and golfer, Gordy spent much of his free time racing his beloved C-Type Jaguar which he affectionately called, "Mother". While he raced at such road courses as Watkins Glen, Thompson, Mt. Equinox, and Sebring, it was Lime Rock Park in Lakeville, CT which was his favorite place to race Mother. Having a strong interest in his Scottish ancestry, Gordy could often be seen wearing his signature kilt around the pits. Gordy also enjoyed playing the bag pipes and was a member of the Amerscot Highland Pipe Band located in Staatsburg, NY. After retiring from racing in the late 1960's, Gordy took up sailing his 36 foot Alberg along the eastern seacoast traveling from the northern tip of Maine to the Virgin Islands, and often doing it solo. With racing still in his blood, Gordy returned to Lime Rock Park 30 years later driving a Lotus Europa in many of their vintage car racing events.

Gordy is survived by his two sons, Gordon MacKenzie and his wife Wendy of Millbrook, NY, their two daughters Cora of Millbrook, NY and Catherine of New Hampton, NH, and son Colin MacKenzie and his wife Lynne of Ellsworth, ME, and their two daughters, Morgan and Bailey both of Ellsworth, ME.

A memorial service to celebrate Gordy's life will be held at a later date.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Honor Flight ( https://www.honorflight.org/ ).
