Glenn A. Close, 75, a lifelong resident of Poughkeepsie died at his residence on Sunday, October 11, 2015, after a courageous battle with lung cancer. Born December 13, 1939 in Poughkeepsie, NY, he was the son of Viola T. and Ralph Milton Close. Glenn married Catherine Zeleznik, his wife of 56 years, on July 31, 1959 at the First Presbyterian Church in Poughkeepsie. Glenn retired from IBM Corp. after over 30 years of service in Poughkeepsie, Fishkill and Somers. During his employment he received an Outstanding Service Contribution Award for his development of an internal control system. In addition to his wife Catherine who survives at home, Glenn is survived by his daughter Jill Ann Krieger of Saugerties, his daughter Catherine and her husband David McClaran of Ravenden, Arkansas, his son David Close and his wife Suzanne of Endwell, NY and his son Michael of Poughkeepsie. Also surviving are his grandchildren Jennifer and her husband, Joe Travers, Cassi and her husband Gregory Diamond, Ashley Krieger and her partner, Steven Potter, Zachary Close, Lexie Close and Caitlyn Krieger as well as his great grandchildren Aiden Christopher Travers, Jordan Diamond, and Owen Potter. He is also survived by his brother Robert Close and his wife Pauline of Poughkeepsie and his sister Elizabeth Ashton of Newburgh and several nieces, nephews and cousins. In his leisure time, Glenn enjoyed camping with his family. They traveled throughout the East coast. He was a member of the National Campers and Hikers and was a Field director for area chapters. He also enjoyed playing Church League Softball with his two sons and was president of the league for several years. He played softball for Trinity United Methodist Church where he was a member and served on the Board of Trustees and was chairman for 4 years. Currently he was a member of Poughkeepsie United Methodist Church. During his retirement years he and his wife took time to travel to Arlington, VT during the summers and to St. Augustine, FL during the winters. Glenn found pleasure in playing bridge and cribbage with his friends. Most of all Glenn loved his family. He was very proud of his daughter Catherine [Trink] who served 20 years in the Navy. He was a civil war buff and enjoyed history discussions with his daughter Jill. For several years he was able to work with his son David who owned Close-By Wine and Liquors. He loved living down the street from his son Mike where they were able to spend many happy hours together. Visitation will be Thursday, October 15 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm at Parmele, Auchmoody & Schoonmaker Funeral Home, 110 Fulton Ave., Poughkeepsie. Funeral services will be held on Friday, October 16, at 10 am from Poughkeepsie United Methodist Church, 2381 New Hackensack Rd., Poughkeepsie. Interment will follow in Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery.
