Obituary

Gary W. Schmitt, Sr., 76 of Wappingers Falls, passed away suddenly on Saturday, June 16, 2018 at his residence.

Born in Poughkeepsie on November 9, 1941, he was the son of the late Frederick and Doris Kirchner Schmitt.

On May 16, 1965 at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Poughkeepsie, he married Dorothy "Dottie" Tompkins. Mrs. Schmitt survives at home.
Gary had a 30 year career with IBM as an Electro Mechanical Engineer retiring in 1994. Following his retirement he owned and operated Schmitt's Hardware Store in Red Oaks Mill and also was co-owner of K&S Powder Coating Inc. in Poughkeepsie.
Gary was a parishioner of New Hackensack Reformed Church where he served as a Deacon, as well as a member of the building and grounds committee and head usher. He loved sports cars, boating, hunting, fishing and swimming. He was very mechanical and could fix almost anything. Gary was a member of Hudson Valley Sportsman's Association, IBM Quarter Century Club, Britts of Hudson Sports Car Club and the NRA.
In addition to his wife Dottie, Gary is survived by his son Eric Schmitt and his wife Krista of Poughkeepsie; 2 grandsons, Cody Schmitt of Poughkeepsie and Steven Schmitt of NC; his brother, Lee Schmitt and wife Patricia of Wappingers Falls; brothers in law, Wayne Tompkins and wife Pat of Millbrook and Harry Tompkins and wife Ellen of Poughkeepsie and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son, Gary Schmitt, Jr.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 21 from 9:30 am – 11 am at New Hackensack Reformed Church, 1580 Route 376, Wappingers Falls with funeral services to follow at 11 am. There will be a reception in the church hall following the services. Entombment will be in Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery at 2 pm.
Memorial donations may be made in Gary's memory to New Hackensack Reformed Church, American Cancer Society or American Diabetes Association. Arrangements have been entrusted to Parmele, Auchmoody & Schoonmaker Funeral Home, Poughkeepsie.
