Elizabeth Koch Smith, 89, of Poughkeepsie passed away on March 7th, 2026, so peacefully, as if to let everyone know that she was finally free to go dance again and be rested next to her beloved husband, Gordon Lisle Smith.
Born on March 15, 1936, to Wilhelm P. And Elisabeth G Koch, her loving parents, Elizabeth is survived by her son, Edward Lisle Smith of Plattsburgh, NY and daughter, Karin Lisle Townsend of Concord, NC (Pete) and their daughter, Ayla.
Elizabeth was an older sister to her pre-deceased brother, William H. Koch who is survived by his children, Billy, Kimberley and Christopher.
At the young age of 29, Elizabeth was diagnosed with severe Type 1 diabetes which created a lifetime of challenges; and yet, despite her condition, she lived an exceptional life, full of happiness and many fulfilling ventures. She truly enjoyed her life as a loving wife and adoring mother. Elizabeth lived an active lifestyle which brought her lots of joy and satisfaction. She was very active in her church life at St. John's Lutheran Church in Poughkeepsie, serving as the long-time Chair of the Altar Guild and participating in a myriad of church activities.  Betty continued to broaden herself through enjoying many classes and groups throughout her life, especially her activity in The Coterie, along with tearing up the dance floor at Germania with her late husband, Gordon.
Elizabeth made friends everywhere she went and was adored by everyone whose lives she touched.  She was an inspiration and role model who will be missed so very deeply but remembered so very fondly.
Visitation will be held Friday, March 13, 2026, from 4pm to 7pm at Parmele, Auchmoody & Schoonmaker Funeral Home, 110 Fulton Ave., Poughkeepsie NY 12603.
Elizabeth's funeral service will be Saturday, March 14, 1:30pm at St. John's Lutheran Church, 55 Wilbur Blvd. in Poughkeepsie, with Rev. Jeffrey Koenig, presiding. Interment will be in Nine Partners Cemetery, Millbrook immediately following the worship service, followed by a catered Celebration of Life gathering at 4 pm back at St. John's Church, in the fellowship hall.
