Obituary

Douglas R. Allen of Chatham, NY,  passed away on September 5, 2021. Beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend—he will be dearly missed.
Douglas grew up in Pine Plains, NY, the son of Edwin and Evelyn Allen. He spent parts of his youth traveling and completing his education. He worked for New York State as speech writer and editor. His love of words and language were reflected in his avocation as a writer. He penned biographies, essays, and short stories. The writing he enjoyed most was done for his family—memoirs, reflections, and always a really good tale full of imagination and perception.

In his retirement, Douglas taught himself to use a lathe and produced beautiful wooden pieces—bowls, platters, candlesticks, rolling pins, pen pots. They will all be treasured by those he leaves behind.

He is survived by his wife Rosemary; his sons Benjamin and Jonathan; their wives Carey and Margaret; and four perfect grandchildren, Emma, Megan, Simon, and Eliot. Also left to mourn him are his siblings: Donald Allen and his wife Pam; Thomas Allen and his wife Judy; and Constance Mayhew and her husband Bill; his sister-in-law, Brenda DeBonis, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by his brother-in-law Albert DeBonis, a great friend and companion.

Calling hours will be on Friday, September 17, from 4 to 6pm at the Allen Funeral Home, 3270 Franklin Ave., Millbrook, NY. Masks and social distancing will be observed. Final services will be private and at the convenience of the family.
Memorial donations may be made to: Doctors Without Borders online at www.doctorswithoutborders.org or: P.O. Box 5030, Hagerstown, MD 21741-5030.

May he rest peacefully in the arms of God.
