Pleasant Valley

Obituary

Donald "Don" Norris Eagen, age 91, of the Town of Pleasant Valley, New York, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 20, 2026, in Poughkeepsie, New York.Don was born on January 30, 1935, in the Town of Wappinger, the son of the late Raphael and Helen (Hasbrouck) Eagen. He grew up in the Hudson Valley, graduated from Arlington High School, where he was a proud member of the football and basketball teams. He was recruited to attend Krissler Business Institute in Poughkeepsie from which he proudly obtained a business degree that he liked to say set him up for life's success. On August 19, 1967, he married Marion (Pokrywka) Eagen. They built a life together in Pleasant Valley rooted in faith, family, and a shared love of the ordinary moments that turn out, in the end, to be quite extraordinary. Marion predeceased him in 2019 (six years and a day) after more than 50 years of marriage. And it is fitting that he was concerned about "getting home" to see the love of his life during his final days.Don dedicated more than 50 years of his career to H.O. Penn, working in sales, service, and eventually marketing, a tenure that speaks to his reliability and the bonds he built over the years with colleagues and customers.Whether driving around Pleasant Valley or stopping in on a friend or relative, Don had a knack for conversation and putting everyone in his presence at ease. He was a proud member of the Elks Club and the Knights of Columbus, organizations that reflected his deep commitment to community and his Catholic faith.  Don was a founding member of the Pleasant Valley K of C Council and was a 4th Degree Grand Knight, the highest ranking member to date.  Don was, without apology, a die-hard Mets fan, a devotion that required both loyalty and a sense of humor, two qualities Don had in abundance. Don lived with the effects of childhood polio yet he never once made it the headline of his story. He got up and embraced each day with a determination and a spirit that left an impression on everyone around him.  His resilience was remarkable; perhaps only surpassed by his unfailing sense of humor. No matter the situation, he never missed an opportunity for a well-timed comeback, a gift that kept those around him laughing until the very end. Don is survived by his sons, James Eagen and his wife Ellen, and William Eagen and his wife Janice; his cherished grandchildren, Benjamin, Sarah Rose, William, and Kaitlin; and his brother, John "Terry" Eagen and his wife Chris. He was predeceased by his wife Marion, his parents, his son Donald, and his siblings Joyce McElmeel, Jacqueline Tompkins, Patricia Nelson, Nancy Holbrook, and Raymond Eagen.
