Dolores Thompson, 89, a local resident of Town of Hyde Park passed away at home on May 14, 2024. She was surrounded by her devoted son Michael.
Dolores was born on February 26, 1935, in Stoneco, N.Y. She was the daughter of Herbert and Alice Green.
Dolores graduated from Wappingers Central High School. She attended Hunter College and also received additional education in Human Sexuality and other Disciplines at SUNY, New Paltz and Dutchess Community College.
For many years Dolores made a special effort to be visible in the African American Community. Dolores was a Health Educator at Planned Parenthood of Mid-Hudson Valley for 27 years.
Dolores worked diligently to encourage African Americans to make health a priority. Her work took her to many places: colleges, correctional facilities, churches, schools, and community centers. She was also a member of Dutchess County Black Historical Society.
Dolores was known for being a wise woman, even at an early age. She was a caregiver to many of her relatives and accepted this responsibility unconditionally.
Dolores is survived by her son and caregiver Michael Thompson, who resides in Poughkeepsie, and her daughter Shelley Coleman (Anthony) of Tampa, Florida.
Dolores was preceded in death by her brother Allen Green, her son Randy Thompson, her husband Clayton Thompson, her son in law Glenn Brown, and her parents. She is also survived by sisters, Gingi Mombasa of Savannah Ga., Patricia Treadwell of Oakland, Ca. and Joan. Milligan of Lake Placid, Fl., several nieces, nephews, cousins, and other extended family and friends.
Dolores's family would like to express their gratitude for the kind, generous, and loving care she received from Hospice, her home health aides Violet Hernandez and Isabel Eaton, and also her special family friend Ozie Williams.
A celebration of Dolores's life will take place Saturday May 25, 2024, from 11 to 1 pm at Parmele Funeral Home, 110 Fulton Avenue, Poughkeepsie, N.Y. 12603. Burial will take place after the service at Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Glaucoma Research Foundation in Dolores's name.
