Dolores
Martynek
Oct 13, 1940 — Sep 21, 2023
Poughkeepsie
Dolores Martynek, 82 of Poughkeepsie NY, passed away on September 21st in her place of residence.
Dolores was born on October 13, 1940, to Don José Alvarez and Doña Milagros Rodriguez in Madrid, Spain. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Madrid where she met and married Arthur O. Martynek, who was also a graduate.
Emigrating to the United States in February 1970 with her husband in search for a better life for their two sons; Dolores worked as a housekeeper and cook before being given the opportunity to manage the dining facility at Oakwood Friends School. A position - Director of Food Services - that she would go on to hold for 25+ years until her retirement.
When not managing the culinary activities at Oakwood, she could be found cheering her sons on during soccer games for the Town of Poughkeepsie Soccer Club, Spackenkill High School, Binghampton University, and Dutchess Community College. Dolores threw herself as passionately into the activities of her grandkids as she did with her sons, never failing to be part of their lives.
Dolores is predeceased by her husband Arthur, her mother and father. She is survived by her two sons Ernesto and Raul. Six grandchildren – Joseph, Marcelina, Andres, Steven, Alejandro, and Santiago. Three great-grandchildren – Katerina, Joseph Jr. and James. A sister Milagros, two nieces – Marina and Lola, nephew – Esteban, and their children – Lola, Paula, Dani, Alvaro, Alex, and Victor. Daughters-in-law Montserrat and Ursula, and longtime partner John Alberg.
A small service for family and friends will be held at Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery on September 30th at 2pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Salvation Army, an organization Dolores felt strongly about.
