David W. Cundy, 96, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 21, 2023 in Florida. He was born March 30, 1927, in Poughkeepsie, NY to Edward and Beatrice Cundy. He was a veteran of World War II obtaining the rank of Sergeant. After being discharged from service he went with the Delaval Separator and then joined the city of Poughkeepsie Police Department as a motorcycle Officer in 1948. He left there in 1958 and joined the Town of Poughkeepsie Police Dept. which was just organizing. He worked up through the ranks to Chief of Police. He left in January 1979 and went to the Dutchess County Sheriff Department as Undersheriff. He retired in October 1993 after 45 years as a Police Officer. After his retirement he moved to Florida where he made his home. He was a member of St. Mary's Church, Daytona Beach, FL.
He was a graduate of New York Police school in 1959 and the FBI National Academy in 1973. He was an avid motorcyclist and a life member of the following groups American Motorcycle Association, Blue Knights, and Gold Wing Road Riders Association. He also was a life member of the New York States Chiefs of Police, and a member of the Retired Police Association State of NY, FBI National Associates, and many other police organizations. Mr. Cundy was also a member of Poughkeepsie Lodge 266 F&AM, Cyprus Shriners, Zangi Grotto, Daytona Beach, American Legion Post 0267, Elks Club & Moose Club in Ormond Beach, Florida.
Mr. Cundy was predeceased by his wife Evelyn, in August of 2022 and his brother, Richard in February of this year. Mr. Cundy is survived by his stepdaughter, Sandra Rice of CT. and several nieces and nephews.
Interment will take place Friday, October 6, 2023 at 12pm from Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery, with Military and Law Enforcement Honors.
