Barbara Atkins Hines was born on May 21, 1946 in White Plains, New York to the Late Henrietta Atkins and Charles Holt.  Barbara spent her early years in White Plains living with her mother and two older sisters Nettie and Cora in a cold water flat with her extended family of uncles, aunts, and cousins.   Her mother instilled in her at an early age a fierce loyalty to family.  As a result, Barbara enjoyed a lifetime surrounded by family enriched with love.

During her formative years, Barbara was educated through the Elmsford school district in Westchester County, New York.  She attended Alexander Hamilton High School where she discovered her love of sports and developed an ear for all genres of music.  During high school, Barbara played competitive badminton, and played the bass drum in the school band.

In 1966, following her graduation from high school, Barbara met and married Charles Hines Sr.   Their union produced one child, a son, Charles Hines Jr. whom she affectionately called "Chuckie".
Barbara began her professional career with IBM in Fishkill, New York where she worked for ten years.  Once the company downsized, she found a new and fulfilling career working with disabled youth as a direct support professional.  She worked at the Cardinal Hayes Home for Children in LaGrange, New York for several years and then went on to work at New Horizons in Pleasant Valley, New York.  She retired after thirty-years of service.

Pre-retirement, Barbara continued as a sports enthusiast.  She actively played with a variety of competitive travel softball teams for almost twenty-years.  Most notably, she traveled all over the East Coast playing the position of catcher with The Woodlands, The New Concept Road Runners, and her beloved Bombers.  She co-coached The Bombers with Art O'Donnell.  She was a devoted Jets and Mets fan who would proudly display her team gear whether they were winning or losing.   Barbara was fondly known as a guru of sports statistics whom few would dare attempt to challenge.  She was an avid fisherwoman of freshwater trout and bass.

Family was always at the center of Barbara's heart.  Holiday gatherings were important and not to be missed.  Everyone looked forward to tasting Barbara's apple pie that could only be described as scrumptious.  She baked two to ensure everyone could get more than one slice.

Barbara relished spending time with her big sisters.  She looked forward to vacationing with Cora.  In particular, they became cruise companions.  Eventually, they were successful in convincing their sister Nettie to join them.  Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, the three sisters took annual cruises together traveling to the US Virgin Islands, Nassau, Aruba, and other Caribbean islands several times over many years.

Barbara was a doting grandmother to Marquis, Dante, and Antoine.  At the tragic loss of her beloved son Chuckie in 2005, Barbara selflessly demonstrated her unwavering commitment to her grandsons.  Through crippling grief, Barbara took an active role in helping to raise her young grandsons.  She was present for them regularly.  They were her pride and joy.

As Barbara's health began to decline, she maintained her amiable demeanor and jovial sense of humor.  She developed a strong connection with her local senior center and attended their sponsored day trips as her health permitted.  Throughout her lifetime, Barbara was a friend's friend who was endeared to many. In her final years, Barbara was blessed to see the expansion of her family.  She had the opportunity to travel to North Carolina to hold her first great-grand-child Amelia.  She subsequently and excitedly became a great grandmother twice more with the addition of Lincoln and Naomi.

Barbara is survived by her sisters - Nettie Webb of Hartsdale, New York and Cora Carey of White Plains, New York; Grandsons - Marquis ( Nyasia) Hines of Atlanta, Georgia, Dante (Rachael) Hines of Clayton, North Carolina, and Antoine Hines of Topsail, North Carolina; Great-grand daughters - Amelia Hines of Clayton, North Carolina and Naomi Hines of Atlanta, Georgia; Great-grand-son - Lincoln Hines of Clayton, North Carolina;  A host of nieces, nephews, and cousins; Friends and neighbors who were held deep in her heart as family.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, February 21 at 11 am from Allen Funeral Home, 3270 Franklin Ave., Millbrook. Interment will follow at St. Joseph's Cemetery, Millbrook.
