Obituary

Arlene Foley passed away peacefully at the age of 101 on Sunday, February 20, 2022, surrounded by loved ones at the home of her daughter in Millbrook, New York.  Born December 30, 1920, in Johnson City, New York, the daughter of Richard and Sarah Rath, Arlene attended Keuka College and worked as a technician for IBM during WWII.  She met Jack Foley in high school.  They married in 1942 and had three children together.

Arlene's life was full and wonderful.  She was an avid reader, gardener, knitter, birdwatcher, cartophile, crafter and shopper.  Her passion for travel took her to many states and countries with family and friends and,  later in life, visiting her children and grandchildren, always ready to help in any way, wherever they happened to be.  She was always up for adventure and could be counted on to find the best lobster roll and chowder or the most beautiful and interesting garden to tour.  She loved her city's rich history, in particular its carousels, and once rented the zoo and threw herself a birthday party!  She never met a dog or cat she didn't want to take home, and always had one or two nearby.  Even at the moment of her passing she had a loving hand on her loyal feline companion Honeybunch.

Arlene was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church, the Monday Afternoon Club, was a founding member of her Study Club and continued to meet with friends she'd known since kindergarten for lunch once a month throughout her life.  She volunteered at Lourdes Hospital and worked part-time at the Johnson City Library.

She was pre-deceased by her parents, her husband, her brother Richard Rath and her lovely daughter in-law Jacqueline S. Foley.  She will be deeply missed by her daughter Susan Arlene Stroup and husband Thomas of Millbrook, New York; her son Christopher Foley and wife AnnMarie of Riesterstown, Maryland; her son Richard and wife Lisa Foley of Billings, Montana; and her grandchildren Kimberly (Greg) Sweck, Kristin (Matthew Anderson) Stroup and Karin (Timothy) Capowski; Erin (Kevin) Plessinger and Ryan (Karen) Foley; Elizabeth (Jason) Barbour, Allison (Rick) Mohler, Parker and Andersen Foley, and Brannen Severson; and her nine great-grandchildren, Hadley, Thomas, Lilliana, Will and Marley; Jacqueline, Garrett, Jack and Patrick; and Madison and Lauren - all of whose lives are much better for having had and known their wonderful Nana.  Arlene had a special place in her heart and life for nieces Sharon Smith and Carolyn Altman and caregiver Cyndi Brizzolara.  She was a trusted and beloved aunt, friend and neighbor to many.

At Arlene's request, the family will hold a service and gathering in Millbrook in the late spring when her family and friends can enjoy being together outdoors - something Arlene especially valued.  The arrangements have been entrusted to Allen Funeral Home, 3270 Franklin Avenue, Millbrook.  In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Arlene's memory to Hudson Valley Hospice: https://www.hvhospice.org/donate-now/ or the Broome County Humane Society: https://www.bchumanesoc.com
