Obituary

Anthony George Herles "Tony", 89,  July 27, 2025 at home.  Tony was the son of Joseph Emil Herles and Ruth Ada Barker Herles. On January 3, 1959 he married the love of his life Barbara Germiller in St. Stanislaus Kostka Church, Pleasant Valley.  He graduated Poughkeepsie High School in 1954 and SUNY New Paltz in 1964.  He taught English for forty years in many schools including Highland High School, Wappingers Falls Middle School, Dutchess Community College and EASL in Poughkeepsie High School. Volunteered with LLI Bard. He received an honorable discharge from the US Army where he was on active duty at Ft. Sill, OK from 1959 to 1961.
Along with parenting, teaching and his own schooling, Anthony continued to write poems and short stories his entire life.  He was published often and won several poetry contests.  A proud moment was when he discovered his poem was published in 1978 in the NY TIMES, Metropolitan Diary.

Surviving are his wife of 67 years at home, sister Barbara Hagen, Lakeland FL, sister-in-law, Monica G Maher, Beacon, New York and sons Christopher Alan Herles, Queens ,New York , and Andrew John Herles (Sherri Kelly Herles) Pleasant Valley.    Grandsons Anthony J. Herles (Chrissy Sparks Herles) Pacolet, SC; Robert R. Herles and Nicholas J. Herles, Pleasant Valley.  Four great-grandchildren: Caleb R Herles, Pink Hill, NC, Henry May, Addalynn Jean and Theodore Quinn Herles, Pacolet SC.  Also many nieces and nephews he very much enjoyed being with on special occasions. He was predeceased by his oldest son Jeffrey J. Herles in 2006.

Services will be held Friday, August 1 at Allen's, Pleasant Valley 10:30 – Noon followed by burial at Calvary Cemetery. LaGrange Avenue, Poughkeepsie.

Memorial donations may be made to Highland High School Retired Teachers Scholarship Fund, Pleasant Valley Library, or a charity of your choice.
