Obituary

Angie M. Smith of Poughkeepsie, NY, died peacefully on Monday, March 28, 2016, in her own bed, in her beautiful home with her loving family by her side.

Angie always gave to others, offering support and advice and always love. It was that caring and her independent values that she passed onto her children, Douglas P. Smith and Lorna Stevens-Smith (CA), Joanne Smith Manginelli and Michael Grappone (CT), Susan E. Smith (NY), and Angela and Chris Tesari (CA). She loved her stepdaughter Diane and Her husband John Rumble (MD). She had a second son, Robert, who died at birth.

She will be admired and remembered for her fearless personality and her love of family by her nine grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Angie was predeceased by Douglas Robert Smith, her husband of 42 years, and brothers Silvio, Pat, and Mario Morreale and her sister-in-law Mary Morreale She is survived by her sisters-in-law Mary Morreale and Anne Morreale.

Intellect, passion and gentleness, integrity and advocacy, steady warm demeanor, and commitment are not always qualities found in one single person. Except our mom.

Born Angelina Marie Morreale, in Brooklyn, NY, to Josephina and Paul Morreale, she moved at age seven with her family to Poughkeepsie, NY. A brilliant student, Mom attended Arlington schools and then graduated at the top of her class from the Krissler Business Institute, allowing her to land a great job with the fledgling IBM corporation. It was there she met her husband Doug and they set up home, first in Red Oaks Mill and then at the idyllic home that they designed together on Sunrise Lane.

Mom had an intense love for family. She adored holidays spent with her brothers and all of the children. Since food was a passion, she planned those menus for weeks. She loved to cook as much as she loved to go out to her favorite restaurants. As children we enjoyed world cuisines and as adults we looked forward to visits home to enjoy her antipasto, lasagna, eggplant, and meatballs.

Besides her zeal for good food, Mom loved to travel. As a young mother, she planned excursions that would let us have fun together. She and Dad journeyed to the Caribbean islands, London, Italy, and throughout the United States. Later, she had the joy of traveling all over the world with her children, experiencing various cultures and cuisines.

As important as home and family were, Mom was incredibly smart and longed to use her knowledge. She returned to work first at Vassar College. After retirement as the VC President's Executive Assistant, Mom brought her talents to the FDR Library. She finally retired at the young age of 84 from the Dutchess County Economic Development Corporation. She received honors and accolades from every position she held.

Retirement didn't mean rest and relaxation for Mom. She had a steady stream of lunch and dinner dates, book club meetings, and antiques study club. There was Coterie, and the St. Francis Auxiliary where she served as treasurer for over fifty years. An avid volunteer, Mom worked with various organizations, including the St. Francis Hospital Emergency room and gift shop, the local chapter of the Alzheimer's Association, and the Stonebridge condo board.

Mom loved life. She will be missed by a wide circle of friends and colleagues that she always inspired with her own resourcefulness, kindness, and generosity, and her funny, worldly, and creative spirit.

Mom had a strong faith in God's love and wisdom. She enjoyed her Sundays at Holy Trinity. She became good friends with Father Armand Padula and would regularly listen to his sermons during his services at Mount Alvernia, St. Peter's, and at the St. Francis Hospital chapel. Her good friend Christine made sure Mom could receive the sacrament of Communion these last few months by coming every Sunday to visit.

We who loved her are very fortunate that Mom gave us the gifts of intelligence, talent, kindness, and thoughtfulness. It was our privilege to have her as a parent, a friend, a mentor, a colleague. It is our great loss that she has passed. Ninety years was not enough.

We would like to thank all of those who helped Mom maintain her independence and health in the last few years as well as these last two unbelievable months, including the Hudson Valley Hospice Blue team the doctors and nurses at both Mid Hudson Medical Group and Caremount, Friends of Seniors, neighbors, friends and particularly Sue Martin, Joan Horning, and Holly Miller who became family.

In lieu of flowers Mom asked that donations be made in her memory to the Alzheimer's Association and the American Heart Association.

Services will be under the direction of the Parmele Funeral Home, 110 Fulton Avenue in Poughkeepsie. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Holy Trinity Church, 775 Main St., Poughkeepsie on Saturday, April 23 at 10 AM, with interment to follow in St. Peter's Cemetery.
