Alice Mary
Molloy
Aug 20, 1935 — May 17, 2023
Pleasant Valley
Alice Mary Molloy, loving aunt and caring friend, went home to be with Jesus on May 17, 2023, surrounded by her loving family. Mary was born in Poughkeepsie, NY on August 20, 1935, to Lawrence and Alice (Campion) Molloy. She graduated from Poughkeepsie High School and went on to earn her BA from Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh, New York, and MA from Wm. Paterson University in Wayne, NJ. A devoted educator, she taught at Catholic schools in south New Jersey for 13 years. Mary moved to Paterson NJ in 1970 where she taught 5th grade at PS 19 for 25 years. In 1989, she was named Teacher of the Year, a recognition she always treasured. She retired from teaching in 1995 but was always willing to offer helpful grammatical corrections when needed. On September 19, 1982, she married Biagio "Benny" Verrone, who predeceased her in 2011 after 29 years of marriage. In 1995, she and Benny moved to Manahawkin, NJ, where she enjoyed playing Mah Jong, appreciating the beautiful view from the light house on Long Beach Island, and opening her home to family and friends who came to visit. In 2017, she relocated to the Hudson Valley to be closer to her family and was a parishioner at St. Stanislaus Church in Pleasant Valley, NY. She was affectionately called Aunt Mary by everyone who came to know and love her. She was very proud of her Irish heritage and her Irish soda bread recipe. An avid Mah Jong player, she taught the game to anyone willing to learn. She also needlepointed beautiful tablecloths, and never forgot to put a card in the mail for a birthday, holiday, or special occasion. Aunt Mary treasured the time she spent with her family, and her generosity and thoughtfulness will be greatly missed.
She is survived by nephews, Edward L. Freer (Brianne), Robert M. Freer II (Gina), and niece Alison M. Kirchner (Brett), all of LaGrangeville, NY, and niece Susan Hyland (Mark), of Venice, FL, as well as several great nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her four sisters, Katherine Molloy Key, Sister Alice Marie OP, Helen Molloy Freer and Mary Lou Beekman. Calling hours will be held on Monday, May 22, 2023, from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the Parmele, Auchmoody & Schoonmaker Funeral Home, 110 Fulton Avenue, Poughkeepsie, NY 12603. A Mass of Christian burial will be offered on Tuesday, May 23, 2023, at 10:00 am at St. Stanislaus Roman Catholic Church, 1590 Main St., Pleasant Valley, NY 12569. Internment will follow in St. Peter's Cemetery, Poughkeepsie. In lieu of flowers, please donate in Mary's name to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, PO Box 50, Memphis TN, 38101-9929.
